Like so many who come to us, Ricky walked into New Visions one day after several different traumas collided in his life to lead him to homelessness. You see, Ricky was shot trying to protect his mom when he was younger. His injuries led to an ongoing disability as well as PTSD and depression. But Ricky’s mantra has always been to never give up and just keep doing the next thing, so as soon as he arrived at our Emergency Shelter, Ricky began to work diligently towards attaining stable housing. Nicole, a Shelter Advocate at New Visions, worked tirelessly alongside of Ricky and our friends at ANAWIM to complete paperwork, attain documents, dot every I and cross every T in order to secure housing. “If you want something,” says Ricky, “it’s up to you to go get it,” and Ricky made sure to do the work to get housed. 6 months later, Ricky had his own apartment and has been there now for nearly a year. Nicole continues
to support Ricky to make sure he has everything he needs to stay housed, and Ricky even stops by our Mohm’s Place meal-site every once in awhile to grab a bite to eat and say hello to those who helped him get to where he is today. “You never forget where you come from,” says Ricky, “and I will never forget New Visions. I thank God every day for bringing me here because coming here is what finally got me into my own apartment and to a place where I feel safe and stable.”
