Staff Spotlight- Brandy

It’s time to shine the staff spotlight on our CEO, Brandy! Brandy began her career in human services 20 years ago, and ended up marrying into our founder’s family and joining the family’s vision of providing food and shelter to those experiencing homelessness and hunger in our community. Brandy has spent time in case management and outreach, and now oversees our entire organization. Brandy’s unique perspective of having lived experiences as a child along with her work in human services brings a strong voice to the table when advocating for people in our community.

Brandy’s journey to New Visions began back in Middle School, when she was a part of the ASTRA service club. “When you’re helping someone else,” she says, “it makes it seem like your own problems aren’t so big.” She credits the teachers and mentors she had in the Council Bluffs School District with helping to make her the person she is today. “They fostered my potential and saw things in me that I couldn’t see at the time,” she says. Now one of her own goals is to always help other people see the greatness that lies within them.

Passionate, outgoing, spontaneous, and impactful are all attributes that describe Brandy and her work at New Visions. She remembers one particular story early in her career that continues to motivate her to impact others. She had been taking a woman to treatment for addiction, and the treatment appointments didn’t seem to be working. “She felt so ashamed and dejected,” says Brandy, “but I told her that life isn’t just a 9-inning game – we play till we win.” After that, Brandy didn’t see the woman until several years later, when she encountered her out in the community. “I didn’t even recognize her at first,” says Brandy, “she stopped me and told me that my encouragement and belief in her had impacted her deeply and changed the trajectory of her life.”

Overcoming challenges in life and not becoming a statistic are some of the things that Brandy is most proud of. She is the first in her family to graduate from college, and recently achieved her Master’s Degree as well. “I want my kids to see that you don’t need to wait until you have the right education or more resources in order to do something great,” she says, “you can do great things right where you are, with whatever you have.”

Some of Brandy’s favorite things include reading, traveling, and potato soup. In her free time, Brandy loves cooking for people. “One of my mottos in life is if you have an empty seat at your table, be sure to fill it,” she says. We are so grateful for Brandy’s tireless persistence in helping people find homes, purpose, dignity, and opportunity while always offering a seat at the table at New Visions.
