Today we are excited to introduce you to Lewis! A member of our dynamic staff team at our Omaha Veteran’s campus, Lewis is our head cook and kitchen manager. An Army Veteran himself, Lewis came to New Visions 6 years ago, when he provided assistance with cooking on the weekends. Weekend help turned into a full-time job, and he says he has never regretted joining our team.
Creativity in the kitchen is one of Lewis’s most valuable assets, and he remembers many occasions when he’s needed to use it! On one particularly memorable occasion, Lewis was expecting to receive a shipment of pulled pork but received ham hocks instead. “I made it work,” he says. He will be receiving a whole hog sometime this month, and he looks forward to the challenge of making use of it!
Lewis describes himself as stubborn, helpful, and loving. “In this job,” he says, “cooking food is just a part of what I do.” Lewis has the opportunity to love and care for our Veterans every day through providing great food and also being a great listener. He says that one of the most satisfying parts of his job is seeing people being connected to the right resources that might lead to getting an apartment or even owning a home or starting their own business ventures. “Everyone has a different story,” he says, “and it’s a powerful thing to see people grow.” We’re blessed to have Lewis (and his cooking!) on our team at New Visions!
